Faculty Awards

Some of the earliest continuous awards for faculty members were initiated in 1957 with the introduction of the Wine Awards, and a number of other awards have since been established. The awards recognize faculty achievement in teaching, research, outreach, and academic advising. The different awards are listed in the order in which they were established.

Wine Awards—The William E. Wine Award for Faculty Achievement was established by the Alumni Fund Council in 1956 in memory of William E. Wine, class of 1904, who served on the board of visitors for 11 years (rector from 1948-52) and as president and member of the board of directors of the Alumni Association. These awards, first presented in 1957, went to the most outstanding teacher in each school until 1962. Academy of Teaching Excellence and Excellence in Teaching Awards—At its Aug. 7, 1972, meeting, the board of visitors created the Academy of Teaching Excellence to reward and recognize outstanding teaching. The board limited membership in the academy to 30 of the most outstanding undergraduate teachers on campus, with no more than 10 elected each year, including each year’s Wine and Sporn Award winners (see above). At the same time, the board approved the expansion of the number of teaching awards given each year and the concept of university-wide student evaluations of undergraduate teachers on a voluntary basis. The board determined that the awards would be based on recognized criteria, including student evaluations, and would go to not more than 10 percent of faculty members teaching undergraduate courses. The academy became a reality in December 1974, with 17 members on the roster and an ultimate goal of 30. Gordon C. Grender professor of petrology, was named chair, and Richard C. Saake, professor of dairy science, chair-elect.

Alumni Awards for Excellence in Research and Extension—Established in 1975 by the Alumni Association, the Alumni Award for Research Excellence and the Alumni Award for Extension Excellence go to outstanding members of the research and extension faculties. The awards, created to recognize outstanding contributions outside the classroom, were presented for the first time in 1976.
