In 1967 when James I. Robertson Jr., now an Alumni Distinguished Professor, arrived on Virginia Tech's campus, he struck up an easy friendship with J. Ambler Johnston, a 1904 and 1905 graduate and primary architect of the university's neo-Gothic look.
